I hadn't much time to blog, but now that I've seen this I can't resist and I stopped everything else. Windows Vista has important kernel changes. Here is what more impressed me.
User Mode Driver Framework: some drivers could be loaded in user mode and video drivers are. No more BSOD for these drivers but a graceful restart. So you can install a buggy beta of your favorite video drivers without worrying too much to loose the precious blog entry that you're writing. I'd like to know more about how this works and what are pro-cons of that.
Scheduled File I/O: there is a prioritization queue of I/O request, and as I understand it can be tied to thread priority (or to a particular IO thread priority, decoupled from the CPU thread priority). I waited this single feature since Windows NT 4.0 If it works as I expect, a paging background application don't bother you anymore (except for the battery consumption if you're using a laptop). Great improvement in productivity.
Really, really interesting changes.
